Understanding Pupil Culture

This dissertation is a qualitative research report on pupil culture.The basic task of schooling is to teach students knowledge , help them to accept mainstream culture and socialize . In this process, there are something could not be accepted by students, even bring incompatible problems. One of the reasons is pupil culture. Pupil culture is a result for students developing to adults' world , it has an important influence on students' socialization. However, Our schooling and teachers neglect and negate pupil culture instead of treating it correctly.Many researches on pupil culture have been done by foreign countries in Last century mid-term , which reflected different national conditions . The research steps in our China are later ,what we do is only some theoretical and general findings , which hard to reflect our native problems and particular characters. Shanghai is in the process of urbanization and modernization , it appears many new changes and new problems in social lives. The life style of students changes correspondingly, and put forward many new requests and challenges .So It is a new research project for educational researchers and teachers to researching and treating pupil culture appropriately , and guiding it's development along the track of mainstream culture .Meanwhile , it is a new demand for the development of methodology of educational research to using qualitative research on particular problems about pupil culture.So I did a qualitative research on pupil culture. It is considered in my dissertation that pupil culture is the life style of one or some groups of students, it is formed with their unique behavior standards and values. In addition to students themselves, some factors also contribute to it, especially social environment, family conditions , school education and peers. Furthermore , by choosing a sample of one junior class and applying qualitative research method , the dissertation describes and interprets behavior standards and values of worker families' students in Shanghai. I was the researcher as the means entering the circumstances to understand their culture based on the their daily Lives, and explores such as teacher-student relationship, peer as soc i at i on , par en t-ch i 1 d interaction, study attitude, plays , ideals and social responsibility in this process . The dissertation reflects many things that teachers and parents never know and induces characters of Shanghai's junior students, points out the appropriate attitudes toward pupil culture. What I did affords a new insight for educational innovation and make the research of pupil culture be on the particular and native way, the qualitative research method is also developed greatly.The dissertation points out , those honest students study hard and creatively with rich experience and extensive knowledge . they have the courage to challenge authorities , they are masters giving their attention to the social development of Shanghai and China , they embody the urban spirit of Shanghai. They pursue cheers in learning , long for communications equally, and they have social responsibilities .All of these have their pupil culture print brands of urban civilization. From this case , the dissertation draw a conclusion that pupil culture is a positive life style , it does not go against our mainstream culture but a beneficial supplement. Pupil culture is productive and developing, students are socialized and grow up in this process of enculturation and anculturation. Why the school and their teachers judge those students incorrectly is due to this reason , that is ,they hold adult's standpoint and neglect the nature of children , they know the students unilaterally and do not realize their pleasure and demands .Those goes against original intention of education.So the dissertation points out, the schooling should understand and accept pupil culture, appreciate and encourage students .concern students' life experiences , link the knowledge of books and lives , and make the teaching and learning cheerfully.
