Biomechanical and Clinical Research on Whiplash Injury

Objective: To study the Biomechanical mechanism and Clinical characterize of Whiplash injury.Material and methods: A biofidelic model and a rear-end apparatus were used in an incremental rear-impact protocol (maximum 8 g) to simulate whiplash of increasing severity. An anatomically accurate, three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element model of the whole cervical spine was developed using computed tomography images based on a normal man aged 28 years old, using 1mm interval in axial, coronal and sagittal planes by the scanner. And study the diagnosis and prognosis of whiplash injuries of cervical spinal cord. Results: A rear-end collision is most likely to injure the lower cervical spine by intervertebral hyperextension at a peak T1 horizontal acceleration of 5g and above. The finite element model consisted of 12177 solid 3-D element with 166979-nodes, under 1. 5Nm segmental movement and force-displacement response were observed, and the result of the finite element model was according with formerly results, Neurological function improved in 34 of 36 cases after operation. A stable bony fusion according to radiological criteria was achieved in all cases 6 months postoperatively. There was no implants break and loosening. Conclusions : Development of A newly biofidelic whole cervical spine (WCS) model and A three-dimensional finite model of the whole cervical spine; For patient with whiplash injuries of cervical spinal cord accompanied by acute traumatic cervical disc herniation, anterior decompression, fusion and internal fixation with plate can offer the immediate stability and a high rate of successful bony fusion.
