Linguistic Study on News Report: Cohesion and Coherence of News Text

Gradually, news style has developed into one with its own characteristics in words, grammar and rhetoric, and so on. This thesis aims to make a modern linguistic sense's study of the whole text under the guidance of the theories such as Text Analysis, Systematic-Functional Grammar, Pragmatics and Cognitive Linguistics, etc.The thesis goes in seven parts:Part One-Preface, briefly introduces the stylistic classification of news text as the most practical style, concerned details of news text as material for study, and the guiding theories , task and methods taken in this thesis.Part Two-Text Analysis' Basic Theory and News Style' s Linguistic Study, mainly touches upon the basic theory of Text Analysis and operating methods, meanwhile points out that many studies on humane-social sciences deeps into the language itself. Thus, traditional study on news style should make a change in theory and method.Part Three-Theme (T)-Comment (C) Structural Cohesion of News Text, investigates the distinctive features in the T-C Structural cohesion of two basic kinds of news text : Inverted-Pyramid Structure adheres to Relevant Standard (I1-linear Standard), Pyramid Structure adheres to Irrelevant Standard (Linear Standard), through introducing the concept Cohesion of Systematic-Functional Grammar, and using a pair of terms Theme and Comment of semantics andpragmatics. And in this respect--Semantic Macro-Pattern ofnews text, it also compares news text with texts in other styles.Part Four-Information Structure' s Cohesion of News Text, mainly describes such non-semantic information as time-indicatinginformation, space-indicatinginformation, information-source-indicating information and clause information structure, and illustrates these information distributions and their function in textual cohesion.Part Five- Grammatical and Lexical Cohesion of News Text, investigates some major manifestations of news text in grammatical and lexical cohesion in the whole text, and explores these major manifestations, combined with the effect-bettering of news report disseminating.Part Six-Coherence Resulted from Cohesion and the Cognitive Explanation for Cohesion and Coherence, discusses about the formation of coherence of news text under the action of cohesion, and gives some reasons for the textual arrangement of information in news text from the cognitive angle.Part Seven-Points Open to Argumentation, deals with such arguments that we shall make deeper investigation in the future as the individual function, the status and mutual relation between sound symbol and picture symbol in TV news text, and the multi-classification and distribution of information in the whole news text.
