With its long history and its large amount of literature works, The Chinese War Novel has become one of the important and major categories of Chinese novels. From Chinese ancient myths and legends on war to some fragmentary descriptions in history books and biographies in Qin and Han Dynasty, from huaben war stories in Song Dynasty to vernacular war novels in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty, from anti-aggression war novels in modern China to the contemporary war novels after "May-4th Movement", The Chinese War Novel has presented its splendid sight. Especially after the founding of P.R.C, more and more war novels appeared in China. Therefore, The Chinese War Novel which has bountiful literature accumulations and rich cultural connotations undoubtedly can be regarded as a comparatively unique novel category in the history of . Chinese novels.This dissertation makes a time-honored survey on Chinese war novels from both macroscopic and microscopicangle, as well as from the aspects of aesthetics and culture. The whole dissertation is divided into two parts. The former part of the dissertation " on the evolution of Chinese war novels" mainly focus on combing the thoughts of the evolution of Chinese war novels, analyzing the representative works of war novels in different era in China and trying to reveal the inherited relationships between ancient Chinese war novels and modern Chinese war novels. And in the latter part of the dissertation "on culture elements of Chinese war novels", I made a survey on Chinese war novels from an angle of the science of culture, particularly from the aspects of Chinese political ethics, the development of "the consciousness of worshipping heroes ", and Chinese culture on the art of war. On the basis of the survey, I demonstrate that Chinese war novels and the cultural ideologies mentioned above greatly influence each other and Chinese war novels also played an important role in shaping our national spirit. In order to make this dissertation a worthwhile one and a creative one that will be better than the previous articles in this field, I adopted the way ofinvolving both Chinese ancient war novels and its modern counterparts, breaking the boundaries between culture and literature, and integrating the explanation of cultural ideologies, the description on literary history and the analysis of artistic theory into my dissertation.
